When Captain Bjorn Gunderson docks with what he thinks is routine cargo, he embarks on an unexpected voyage. On a milk run from Welliver to Breakall, a tiny rock punctures his ship and leaves the crew adrift twenty-thousand years from home. With food, water, and air running out, a desperate crewman takes a reckless gamble, risking his life in a daring bid to find safety. What he finds instead puts them all at risk.

Join Captain Gunderson and his crew on the final voyage of the Solar Clipper Wanderer in book one of Tales from the Deep Dark -- A Light in the Dark.

An award winning producer of science fiction and fantasy podcasts, Nathan Lowell has produced eight novels totaling over 160 episodes and 70 hours of podcast fiction. Since 2008, four of his productions have been finalists in the Parsec Awards and his book--Captain's Share--won the 2010 Parsec Award for Best Podcast Fiction (Long Form). In 2010, Ridan Publishing began producing his work in paper and ebook formats. Those books are available online from , Barnes and Noble, the iBook , and from Ridan Publishing.

A Light In the Dark is the first of a series of novellas set in the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper. The series focuses on the happenings in and around a renegade outpost, a place outside the jurisdiction of the Confederated Planets--a place where the normal rules don't apply and where anything might happen.

Novel Nibbles are a series of shorter works offered in ebook only format for those who would like something to read on their smartphones and other small mobile devices. Coming in at around 20,000 words, they're shorter works for smaller screens.

A Light In The Dark Tales from the Deep Dark Book 1 eBook Nathan Lowell

Nathan Lowell has written several novels in the "Solar Clipper" universe, where he shows the ordinary lives of people hundreds of years in the future.

This story, like the rest of his series, takes place mostly onboard a trading ship. While most of his novels spend time on day-to-day routine, this novella necessarily jumps directly into the action.

And this story has action; more than most Nathan Lowell novels, in fact. This story cuts directly to a survival nightmare, coupled with betrayal and a crippling attack.

I'll admit that I had philosophical differences with the author about the ending, but it says something that even if I don't agree with the resolution, I still give the book five stars.

Nathan has a propensity for describing libations, so I'll use a fluid argument. For a dollar, you could either get a couple sodas, one specialty coffee, a bottle of water, or a short story by a talented writer.

Only one of those will stick with you and give you something to think about.

A Light In The Dark Tales from the Deep Dark Book 1 eBook Nathan Lowell Reviews

I've really been hungry for more new Solar Clipper fiction. Nathan Lowell hooked me with his terrific coming of age sci-fi tale, Quarter Share. And because I came a bit late to the party, I was able to enjoy the podcast stories straight through Owner's Share. Its great stuff, and I've picked up the first two books while revisiting the podcasts from time to time.

This new novella reinserts the reader back into the familiar universe while connecting some new dots. It's a great read and a steal at just 99 cents. Longtime Lowell fans will want to grab this ASAP, while readers just starting out with Nathan can use this as an introduction to what his wonderful series is all about. No matter how you slice it, its an enjoyable and quick read at just the right price !
Nathan Lowell is just a plain `ole good storyteller. I'd be willing to bet if he tried his hands at westerns, he would excel in that genre in addition to what he has done for science fiction.

This is shorter than a novel, and much longer than a short story, and is priced just right for the version. Lowell does a good job of staging the background, having good (and meaningful) dialogue between his characters, and leaves you wanting a little more - in this case, I can't wait for more of this series in addition to the his other series. If you're looking for good science fiction without all of the strange alien names that happens to be a good tale this one is for you. If you've read and enjoyed his Quarter Share, etc. offerings you will certainly want to pick this one up.
Nathan Lowell has crafted a wholly believable sci-fi universe. He has done it without recourse to invading aliens, cliched larger than life heroes and villains or any of the usual space opera clap-trap.,

Additionally, he can write. His words paint pictures in the mind. His characters are so well developed that the reader exults in their triumphs and is heart broken by their tragedies.

I strongly suggest any reader start with Quarter Share and read his share series right through in order. Only then start on this book or his other recent book In Ashes Born.
I have been a big fan of the Golden Age Of The Solar Clipper universe, since first reading Quarter Share, in 2014. The setting of this novella first appears in the fifth book of the Trader's Tales series (Captain's Share), and has been intriguing ever cents, even though it was only briefly depicted there, and incidentally at that.

I love these kind of backstory--how it all began--stories, and this one does not disappoint!
I found Mister Lowell's writing style to be easy to deal with. Here he tells a story of a freighter trapped between destinations with no way reach anywhere short of being rescued by another ship that happened to pass close enough to spot the crippled freighter. To add a little something extra to the story, the author leaves open the possibility that the ship may have been intentionally disabled and that pirates might be responsible.

In the end, the ship is rescued, but the company that the ship belongs to has gone out of business. The ship itself can not be repaired, even if towed to a ship yard, and the crew must expect a new life. Will they stay together? Will they go their separate ways? Will they become smugglers or pirates? Mr. Lowell could have made the ending a little bit cleaner. Instead he left some questions unanswered.

I hate it when they do that, that's why I took one star away.
There are some things in this book that makes the author's other books about the Deep Dark make sense and more so with the recent release of "In Ashes Born." This is a must read, the real first introduction to the world of solar clippers and their job of hauling freight all over the Western Annex and "proof" of the existence of Darkside and the activities that take place outside of the jurisdiction of the CPJCT and the TIC.

Every tale has a beginning or even a prequel, the story behind the story that Nathan Lowell has so artfully spun for a great many of us. This is that story.
A Light in the Dark follows a recipe that is probably at least sixty years old. But it is a good recipe and Mr. Lowell is a competent short order cook. As a result, we get to eat a meal with familiar taste and aroma, but who can refuse a revisit in mama's kitchen? The aging, rough but tender space skipper, Gunderson, and his Second Mate, Nancy, pilot a transport spaceship among various planets in the galaxy. A critical situation develops out there in the Dark (during faster-than-light jump, I assume). The outlook is very grim, but Gunderson's John Waynish personality and luck intervene. His former brush with an illegal cabal becomes now solution and rescue. While the legal aspects may restrict him to space alone in the foreseeable future, Nancy's covert coveting of her Captain may lighten the sentence. Very nicely written, though somewhat dated. Mr. Lowell invents future star-mariners' argot which does not jar your palate. Although some solutions not very convincing and more than somewhat vague, a pleasant trip to the origins of the golden age of SF.
